Casino had been established in 1856 from a cattle station named Cassino. Before this the settlement was known as The Falls. An inn, The Durham Ox had been established. The Clerk of Petty Sessions resided in The Falls.

Father Johnson was appointed to the care of Grafton in 1863 with a territory that extended from the Clarence to the Tweed.

Four years later, in 1867, the Richmond and Tweed mission was formed under the care of Father J J O’Neill with Casino being the principal centre of the mission.

Father Johnson made frequent visits to Casino. In 1863 he celebrated two marriages: Thomas Madden to Elizabeth Roach and Thomas Clark to Elinor Madden. On the same day several children were baptised.

Between 1863 and 1867 Father McCarthy and Dean Lynch visited Casino. In 1967, the Richmond and Tweed mission was formed under the care of Father J J O’Neill with Casino being the principal centre of the mission. He resided at the Durham Ox, kept by Mrs Meany who was also in charge of the Post Office and the Butchers Shop, all situated in the vicinity of the present railway bridge.
